German cello made by Johann Georg Melzl, Straubing 1842
German cello made by Johann Georg Melzl, Straubing 1842
For sale is a beautiful South German cello made by Johann Georg Melzl, Straubing in 1842. Instruments by this maker are very rare, especially the cellos, which are sought after. Georg Melzl was a student of Alois Thumhart, which can be clearly seen in the architectural style. He chose a very similar Stradivarius model, which is flat-arched and the way the ff holes are cut is very similar to Thumhardts nstruments. The choice of wood is fantastic, he has used beautiful flamed wood for the bottom and sides. The varnich has a very beautiful bright red-brown color. This cello is in great condition for its age, with no repairs worth mentioning. The sound of this cello is also very good, it is warm and radiant, and has enough power to keep up with good orchestras.
