This exceptional cello, crafted in 1865 by the renowned French luthier Paul Joseph Bailly (1844–1907), is a rare and early example of his work, made shortly after leaving the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. It clearly reflects the influence of Vuillaume’s craftsmanship, showcasing meticulous attention to detail and refined artistry. Built on a Stradivari model, the cello features a stunning golden-orange varnish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood. The back is made from two pieces of beautifully flamed maple, a testament to the fine materials Bailly selected for his instruments. The f-holes, executed in the classic Stradivari style, contribute to the instrument’s elegant and refined appearance.
This instrument is in good condition for its age. The original neck remains intact, and the varnish, while showing only minimal signs of wear, retains its warmth and depth. Cello examples from this period are rare, making this cello an exceptional find for musicians and collectors alike.
The sound of this cello is as impressive as its craftsmanship. It possesses a rich, resonant tone with a clear and projecting voice. The lower register is deep and sonorous, while the upper register maintains brilliance and warmth, allowing for a wide dynamic range and expressive capabilities suited to both solo and ensemble playing.
