Rare and interesting Italian violin by Pietro Mercolini Ancarano ca 1870
This exceptional violin, crafted around 1870 by Pietro Mercolini in Ancarano, is a rare example of fine Italian violin making. Mercolini (1821–1891) was both a farmer and a violin maker, apprenticed under Francesco Maurizi. He was active in various locations, including Colli del Tronto, Controguerra, and Civitella del Tronto, but predominantly worked in Ancarano.
Ancarano is a picturesque town in the Abruzzo region of eastern Italy, situated on a hill overlooking the Tronto Valley. The town maintains the appearance of a medieval citadel, surrounded by walls with two gates: Porta da Monte and Porta da Mare. Its rich history and scenic landscapes contribute to the cultural heritage that influences local artisans like Mercolini.
The instrument features a stunning one-piece flamed maple back, demonstrating exquisite wood selection and craftsmanship. Mercolini's model is deeply personal yet distinctly Italian, radiating elegance and charm both visually and tonally. The violin is in excellent condition and has been expertly set up to bring out its full tonal potential. It produces a rich, dark, and clear sound, remarkably well-balanced across all registers. With its mature, seasoned tone, this instrument truly honors the legacy of 19th-century Italian violin making.
Adding to its visual appeal, the violin is coated in a beautiful golden varnish, enhancing its antique character. Certified by Dmitry Gindin, this instrument is a remarkable find for musicians and collectors alike, offering both historical significance and an outstanding, refined sound.
