Violin by Georg Winterling (1908, Hamburg)
Violin by Georg Winterling (1908, Hamburg)
Overview:
This violin, built in 1908 by the renowned Hamburg-based luthier Georg Winterling, is a superb example of German violin making at the turn of the 20th century. The instrument features a beautifully preserved red-brown oil varnish with a rich, transparent texture that enhances the natural beauty of the tonewoods. Its one-piece maple back, marked by a broad and deep flame, gives the violin both visual distinction and excellent acoustic depth. The craftsmanship is of exceptional precision, as is characteristic of Winterling's best work. This is a particularly beautiful and remarkably well-preserved example, fully set up and ready to play.
Tonal Characteristics:
The violin produces a rich, warm tone with a clear, singing upper register and a mature, rounded depth in the lower strings. It projects confidently while maintaining a refined and nuanced voice, ideal for both chamber and orchestral settings. The playability is effortless and balanced, offering excellent response and control.

About the Maker:
Georg Winterling (1859–1930) was one of the most highly regarded violin makers in northern Germany. After studying under renowned luthiers such as Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume in Paris, he returned to Hamburg and established his workshop in 1880. Winterling was known for his fine craftsmanship, elegant outlines, and exceptional oil varnish. His instruments often reflect Italian models but are distinguished by a personal, refined German touch. Today, Winterling violins are sought after by professionals for their aesthetic beauty, reliability, and rich tonal characteristics.
